FACT: I absolutely adore animals.
FACT: when I discovered that there was a place you could just go swim with sea turtles, we took a 2 hour detour to do so.
The whole time throughout the trip to Mexico and Belize we had been told ‘oh yeah you’ll definitely see some turtles.’ So with 2 weeks of the 2 1/2 week holiday down and no turtles seen, we had to pull some drastic measures. I’d scoured Tripadvisor about where to go, and ‘Turtle Bay’ seemed to be a reasonable guess. There were mixed reviews on guides and tours, until I saw just one post that was all I needed: all you had to do is hire a snorkel mask and swim out 50m. So from Playa del Carmen we hired a car and drove back down south towards Tulum to Akumal Bay (a.k.a ‘Turtle Bay’).
It was seriously as simple as putting on a snorkel mask and flippers and heading out until you see turtles.
It was, without a shadow of doubt, the best part of the holiday, the highlight of 2015, and something that I’ll just cherish forever. In the space of 45 minutes we saw probably 8 turtles, ranging from old, massive and majestic to tiny, young and adorable. For anyone who has seen Finding Nemo, it was just like swimming with Squirt.
It’s really amazing to just observe them as they munch on sea grass and glide around, occasionally popping up for air – they are really just magical. The visitors kept their distance and were respectful, and the whole place is dotted with instructions like not wearing sunscreen because it hurts their eyes, swim rather than wade so you don’t disturb the ground, and don’t touch.
So without further ado, here are some shots of a little Squirt:
